On November 2, 2021, The US Marshals Service announced plans to move 400 DC Jail residents to a prison 4 hours away, after an inspection at the jail found extremely poor conditions. As of November 9, 2021 nearly 140 residents have been transferred. One resident of note, ANC Joel Castòn narrowly avoided transfer after a public outcry. Castòn, the first ANC elected while incarcerated, was told on the 8th that he would be transferred to Lewisburg. Both public officials and members of the  community spoke out in support of Mr. Castòn. He has since been released on parole. For more information, see this article.
