ANNOUNCEMENT
Neighbors for Justice Receives $2,000 Grant from Capitol Hill Community Foundation
We are pleased to announce that we have received a $2,000 grant from the Capitol Hill Community Foundation in support of our Civic Reentry Workshop initiative at the DC Jail.
Research shows that individuals who are civically engaged — including through voting — are less likely to recidivate. Many residents at the DC Jail are unaware that they retain their right to vote, or face logistical barriers such as registration deadlines, mail-in ballot procedures, and limited information on local candidates. This initiative connects residents to their rights before release, helping build the pro-social identity necessary for successful long-term reentry.
With support from the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Neighbors for Justice will host a series of Civic Reentry Workshops inside the DC Jail. These sessions will provide dual-track support:
- Civic Literacy — Navigating the DC mail-in ballot system, understanding local Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) representation, and learning how to advocate for community needs.
- Reintegration Strategy — Practical planning for housing, employment, and vital document procurement, including IDs and Social Security cards, during the critical period immediately following release. Peer and facilitator-led workshops, along with “The First 72 Hours” workbook, will help participants map out a concrete reentry plan.
We are grateful to the Capitol Hill Community Foundation for their partnership and commitment to civic equity in the Washington, DC community.
